ALS, [1908 July 2] : Redding, Connecticut, to Jean Clemens.

Clemens writes to Jean that he is "disappointed, distressed, & low-spirited, for that dream of yours & mine has come to nothing. That house turns out to be a poor trifling thing ..." He expresses his desire to "situate you exactly to your liking, dear child ... and I wish I could take your malady, & rid you of it for always. I wish your mother were here; she could help us.
